Abstract

Towards a Complete Census of Black Hole Accretion Power in the Universe

Matt Malkan (UCLA)

We will review the many methods used to identify and quantify energy in galaxies that is produced by accretion onto their central massive black holes, at all wavelengths across the elecromagnetic spectrum. Much of this energy gets absorbed and re-emitted before we ultimately observe it. In the many cases where we cannot use geometry to help us, because the galaxies are very far away, the key is to distinguish the energy that is ultimately AGN-produced from that which is instead powered by stars and especially hot stars that formed recently.  The key roles of multiwavelength data which in particular covers the near- and mid-infrared will be emphasized.
